What is VoIP?

Voice-over-IP (VoIP) is a standard telephony protocol for the transmission of digital voice communications over an IP network, such as the Internet. The prevalence of broadband Internet connectivity in homes and businesses, coupled with low operational cost and high service flexibility has prompted many subscribers to migrate from the traditional copper wire telephone lines of the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) to VoIP.

VoIP enjoys widespread popularity, and its adoption among consumers and businesses is growing. Many VoIP customers have tried to use fax machines on their VoIP connections and found them to be unreliable. The reason for this is that VoIP's audio digitization processes are optimized for human speech, not the signals used by analog fax machines.

VoIP works by digitizing sounds into small data packets and streaming them over the Internet in real-time. Most of these packets arrive at their destination intact, but some are lost, and some are delayed. For voice calls, minor packet loss or packet delay is acceptable and allowed because the impact to call quality is minimal. For fax transmissions, even minimal packet loss or packet delay can cause transmission failures and lost pages.

Although protocols have been developed for Fax-over-IP (FoIP), they have failed to gain wide market acceptance and support from equipment manufacturers. As a result, VoIP service providers tell their customers to implement a dedicated fax server or to keep analog phone lines for their fax machines.
